Built over six years, it was perhaps the most spectacular project of its time. Its operation was tested by its namesake, mechanical engineer József Gruber, professor at the Department of Fluid Mechanics at the Budapest University of Technology, and his team. On the site bordered by Hegyalja, Sánc and Bérc Streets, two piano-shaped pools were built using a German licence. The tessellated retaining wall was designed by András Széll and György Vadász.
