Here is the list of buildings and gardens that await you at this year’s Budapest100

This year, the theme of the Budapest100 festival is our immediate (natural) environment: the green spaces of our homes, workplaces, community areas, and gardens. Nothing proves the relevance of this topic more than the record number of participants: residents of 42 buildings, staff from 19 institutions, and caretakers of 16 gardens will take part in the program on May 24–25, during the Open Houses Weekend.

This year’s festival theme does not focus on a specific historical period, which has opened the door for buildings from various eras to participate, as well as for showcasing the diversity of urban green spaces. The venues of this year include downtown residential houses, a housing block’s charming front garden, a university dormitory, a cultural institution, a hospice house, and several community gardens.

With this year’s theme, we aim to draw attention to what the city’s green oases provide to us, urban dwellers, and what we can give back to them. The green spaces in our cities play a crucial role in improving air quality, mitigating the formation and negative impacts of urban heat islands, and preserving the diversity of the plants, animals, and insects that live with us. These effects accumulate: alongside large public parks, the smaller and larger gardens bordered by buildings and cared for by their residents also significantly shape the well-being of both the city and its inhabitants.

A garden is both a sanctuary and a shared space: a place where generations, neighbors, and communities can come together, taking shared responsibility for their living environment and nurturing human connections. This closely aligns with the goals of the Budapest100 architectural and cultural festival.

The strength of Budapest100 lies in its communities, and this year, it is especially needed, as the difficulties in cultural funding have also affected the festival. Previous sources of support have significantly decreased, and new opportunities have been limited. Therefore, it is now more important than ever for all past and future visitors and supporters to come together in support of the festival.
