    Budapest100 presents: the '70s

The 14th edition of Budapest100, taking place between 9-12 May 2024 will showcase the city’s late modern heritage and launch a conversation about its perceived value and possible future. Continuing the tradition, the four-day festival will again start with a professional day. The city’s buildings from this period also have a wealth of interesting stories to tell, which urban history fans will be able to discover during the Friday urban walk day and the weekend of open houses.

Budapest100 2024 explores the diverse built heritage of the 1970s, looking for the values and possible futures of the houses built then. The decade was a colourful era of architectural pioneering, but because of its obscurity it has yet to take its rightful place in public thinking. . The public often views this period negatively and with a bad preconception, but at international level there are a growing number of projects dealing with the values of late modern architecture and heritage in the Central European region. Thus, our event aims to join these initiatives as a special event of KÉK’s ‘Modern Season’.

    The Budapest100 database

Since the launch of Budapest100 in 2011, we have tried to find and invite all the houses to join that are related to the theme of the year. Every year we collect around 2-300 buildings in a list, and invite them to join the programme. On average, 40-50 of these buildings will finally open their doors during the Budapest100 weekend each year, and it is mainly these that will be the subject of detailed research, while the rest will have an online house data sheet containing the basic information.. Each year, the research – the basis for building history exhibitions, games, quizzes and even permanent displays in the houses – is carried out by enthusiastic volunteers who have a passion for urban history.

In the map below, we have indicated all the buildings contacted, so it is intended to make the database, which is growing year by year, easy to search and browse.

Would you like to contribute with your research or even your personal memories to the history of the buildings? Contac us at budapest100@kek.org.hu!
